How to Give to Global Missions Wisely

Want to support global missions but unsure where to start? You’re not alone. Many Christians feel called to give internationally but wonder: Which ministries are trustworthy? How will my donation be used? Will it actually make a difference?

Here’s the truth: Over 2 billion people worldwide still lack access to the Gospel, yet 90% of missionary resources go to already-reached areas. Your strategic giving can change that. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to give wisely, make a lasting impact, and partner with ministries that align with your heart for the Gospel.

Why Giving to International Missions Matters

Supporting overseas ministries—orphan care, education, evangelism, and community development—helps bring hope and transformation to parts of the world that are significantly underserved and unreached with the gospel. When you donate to global missions, you invest in long-term change: children receiving schooling, fighting against human trafficking,  church planting in communities where Christ is not known and where little to no witness exists; training the next generation of Christian leaders. As the global body of Christ, international missions are important because we are called to make disciples of all nations. (Matt 28:18-20) The phrase, “gospel poverty” has been used to describe the situation of entire populations that have no Bible in their language or local church for people to attend and learn about what it means to become a Christian. We are called to step into this poverty.

Real Impact: Zahara’s Story

Zahara was an orphan in East Africa with no access to education, and on the  verge of getting sold as a child bride at the age of 12. Through faithful donors who gave monthly to support child sponsorship programs, she received schooling, mentorship, and hope. Today, she’s the CEO of her own company, employing others in her community. Your giving has the capacity to create this kind of generational transformation.

How to Choose a Trustworthy Missions Organization

Before you give, it’s critical to evaluate the ministry. Here’s what to look for:

Transparency and Accountability

It is important to make sure the ministry clearly outlines how funds are used, shows impact reports or stories, and keeps good financial records. Look for organizations that are members of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, or Charity Navigator. These organizations help non-profit organization stay accountable and uphold policies and standards that maintain the health of the organization. They also provide rankings.

Long-term Impact

Look for ministries committed to sustainable change—long-term discipleship, education programs, community development. Are they involved in work that is long-term sustainable? Do they have experienced leadership with a good track record? How long have they been in existence?

Specific Programs You Care About

Maybe you feel called to support orphan care, child sponsorship, short-term mission trips, or education initiatives. Choose ministries aligning with your passion and calling. Pray about how God wants you use your business, your family to make a difference in the world. Who are the people in ministry you already know? What are they doing? Do you have that same heart for ministry as they do? Find those who do in your church or community. Reach out and learn from them.

What Are the Different Ways to Give to Missions?

Not all giving looks the same. Here are the most common donation models:

One-time Gift: A single donation now, perfect for people wanting to give quickly or test a ministry. Typical commitment: $50-$500+

Monthly or Recurring Giving: Simple monthly support for those wanting consistent partnership and deeper impact. Typical commitment: $25-$250/month

Child Sponsorship or Orphan Care: Giving specifically toward a child’s care, ideal for donors passionate about caring for orphans. Typical commitment: $35-$75/month

Missionary or Worker Sponsorship: Supporting a missionary or team long-term, perfect for donors wanting to invest in people, disciple making and church planting, not just projects. Typical commitment: $50-$500/month

Project-based Gifts: Fund specific programs like schools, clean water, or outreach. Great for donors who want tangible impact in a specific area. Typical commitment: $100-$5,000+

Frequently Asked Questions About Missions Giving

How much should I give to missions?

While there’s no set rule, many Christians follow the biblical principle of proportional giving—giving according to how God has blessed you (1 Corinthians 16:2). Some give 10% of their income as a tithe, with additional offerings to missions. Start where you can and let God lead you to increase as He provides.

Are missions donations tax deductible?

In the United States, yes—if you donate to a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Always request a receipt for your records. Consult the IRS guidelines on charitable giving or your tax advisor for specific questions.

How do I verify a missions organization is legitimate?

I’ve already referred to these sources, but I’ll repeat them: ECFA.org for Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability certification, CharityNavigator.org for independent charity evaluation, request the organization’s annual report and financial statements, and read reviews and testimonials from other donors.

What’s better: one-time giving or monthly support?

Both have value! One-time gifts help with immediate needs or special projects. Monthly giving provides sustainable, predictable income that allows ministries to plan long-term programs, hire staff, and create lasting change. If possible, monthly support creates greater impact.

Can I visit the mission field to see my donation at work?

Many organizations, including Storyline Missions, offer short-term mission trips where donors can see their support in action. This deepens your connection to the work and gives you firsthand stories to share with others.

How to Give Smartly: Questions to Ask Before You Donate

Before committing to any organization, ask these important questions:

The first question is a question you need to ask yourself. Why are you giving? Read Matthew 6 and consider Jesus’ words about how we are to give to his work. This is often overlooked and should be a part of the process for every believer.

Once your heart is aligned with God’s design for giving based on Matthew 6, the next step is due diligence.

Does the ministry provide clear reports or stories showing how gifts are used? Look for regular newsletters, impact reports, or video updates.

Is the donation method secure and tax-deductible (if required)? Ensure the website uses secure payment processing (https://) and provides tax receipts.

Do you receive regular updates or communication from the ministry? Healthy organizations keep donors informed about ongoing work and challenges.

Is there a way to support beyond money—prayer, short-term visits, advocacy? The best partnerships involve more than finances. Can you pray for specific needs? Join a mission trip? Advocate for their work?

Are you comfortable with the ministry’s core values and approach to missions? Read their statement of faith and ministry philosophy.

Do they align with your biblical convictions?

Final Thoughts: Why Your Giving Matters More Than Ever

In a world where so many are forgotten and many have yet to hear about Christ, your partnership is greatly needed. Supporting international missions is more than charity—it’s partnership in God’s work, a commitment to long-term transformation, and a chance to see lives changed forever.

The need is urgent. The harvest is ready. Your generosity when paired with wisdom and prayer will reach the unreached, provide relief and rescue for orphans, equip leaders, and advance the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
